Mechanism of Action
This extract enhances skin vitality by improving blood microcirculation, which aids in nutrient delivery and visibly diminishes dark circles and puffiness. Its pentacyclic triterpenes contribute to increased dermal density and elasticity, leading to a reduction in sagging and fine lines. As a skin conditioning agent, it strengthens the skin barrier and helps normalize sebum levels, improving moisturization and reducing flaking in compromised skin. The presence of powerful antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic acids provides robust protection against free radical damage. Furthermore, it actively addresses aging and hyperpigmentation by inhibiting glycation-induced protein cross-linking and tyrosinase activity. Its antibacterial efficacy against *P. acnes* and *S. epidermidis* is attributed to flavonoids and tannins, with tannins also supporting collagen turnover for wound healing.

Stability
Alcohol-soluble extracts of Terminalia arjuna may exhibit poor stability in cosmetic formulations, potentially leading to oxidation and discoloration. However, incorporating the extract into lipid nanoparticle emulsions can significantly enhance its stability and bioavailability. Certain beneficial properties, such as the inhibition of glycation and tyrosinase activity, have demonstrated heat stability. An oily extract has been shown to maintain stability within a broad pH range of 3 to 10.
Safety
Safety Profile
Terminalia Arjuna Extract is generally regarded as safe for topical application in cosmetic products. In vitro studies have indicated no cytotoxic, genotoxic, hemolytic, or mutagenic effects at concentrations up to 2000 µg/ml. Acute and subacute oral toxicity studies in rats showed no significant adverse changes in physiological parameters or organ histopathology, with no lethality up to 2000 mg/kg body weight. Topical cream formulations containing up to 2% of flavonoid and tannin fractions did not induce skin irritation in Swiss Albino rats. Despite its low irritancy profile, isolated instances of skin irritation, redness, or allergic reactions have been reported, making a preliminary patch test advisable for widespread usage, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin.
