Mechanism of Action
As an emollient, Sucrose Polycottonseedate effectively softens and smooths the skin's surface, contributing to improved texture and feel. It serves as a skin conditioning agent, helping to maintain epidermal integrity and a healthy appearance. Structurally, it acts as a surfactant, adept at reducing liquid surface tension, and as an emulsifying agent, facilitating the stable dispersion of oil and water phases in cosmetic emulsions. This sugar-derived fatty acid ester also supports the skin's natural moisture balance.

Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that Sucrose Polycottonseedate, along with related Sucrose Fatty Acid Esters, is safe for use in cosmetic and personal care products under current practices and concentrations, with the highest reported concentration being 87.7% in lipstick. This ingredient also holds approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a direct food additive and complies with the general provisions of the European Union's Cosmetics Directive. While a 21-day occlusive patch test indicated slight irritation at 1%, further studies demonstrated non-irritating effects at up to 13% and no sensitization at 88%. Irritation observed at 17.19% in certain formulations was attributed to other constituents.
