SUCROSE OCTAACETATE.

Valuable CAS 126-14-7 / DENATURANT, FRAGRANCE

Sucrose Octaacetate is a highly acetylated, hydrophobic derivative of sucrose, primarily functioning as an emulsifier and thickening agent. It enhances product texture and stability while also acting as a masking agent and denaturant in cosmetic formulations.

denaturant masking emulsifying thickening

Science

As a neutral, hydrophobic molecule, Sucrose Octaacetate stabilizes emulsions by facilitating the even dispersion of immiscible phases and increases product viscosity. Its acetylation renders it oil-soluble, contrasting with the hygroscopic nature of its parent molecule, sucrose. While not directly interacting with skin on a beneficial level, its functional properties contribute to product aesthetics and performance.

Stability

Optimal stability is achieved at pH 5.40 when refrigerated at 4°C for maximum shelf life. Formulations can be stable between pH 4 and 6 for shorter durations (less than 25 days) at 25°C. The compound slowly hydrolyzes in water, with approximately 0.25% of acetate ester bonds breaking after boiling for 1 hour, and 0.20% after standing at 40°C for 5 days. Emulsions formulated with 2% Sucrose Octaacetate were unstable at extreme temperatures (-18°C and 50°C for 24 hours) but demonstrated greater stability when stored at 4°C, followed by 20°C.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that saccharide esters, including Sucrose Octaacetate, are safe for use in cosmetic applications. The US FDA has approved it as a direct and indirect food additive since 1977, although it is not recognized as safe and effective for OTC nail-biting deterrents due to insufficient efficacy data for that specific application. The EPA determined a reasonable certainty of no harm from aggregate exposure, noting low dermal toxicity in animal studies and only slight skin irritation in rabbits. No restrictions on its use are noted under European Union regulations.
