STYRENE/BUTADIENE COPOLYMER.

Valuable CAS 9003-55-8 / OPACIFYING

Styrene/Butadiene Copolymer is a synthetic polymer that forms a flexible, durable film on the skin's surface. This ingredient is utilized to enhance the longevity and water resistance of cosmetic formulations while also contributing to their texture and opacity.

Science

This copolymer operates primarily by creating a thin, protective film upon application, significantly improving the wear and water resistance properties of skincare and cosmetic products. Due to its substantial molecular size, percutaneous absorption into the skin is not expected, ensuring its action remains superficial. Beyond film formation, it also functions as an opacifying agent and increases product viscosity, thereby refining the aesthetic and textural characteristics of formulations.

Stability

Styrene/Butadiene Copolymers are susceptible to degradation from thermal, UV, and oxidative exposure, primarily due to the double bonds present in their mid-blocks. Butadiene-type copolymers may degrade via crosslinking, leading to increased rigidity. While insoluble in water, this ingredient is soluble in various common organic solvents, including benzene, chloroform, and toluene.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that styrene and vinyl-type styrene copolymers, a category encompassing Styrene/Butadiene Copolymer, are safe under current conditions of use and concentration in cosmetic products. Due to their large molecular size, percutaneous absorption is not anticipated. The Panel considered potential concerns regarding residual styrene and 1,3-butadiene monomers (classified as carcinogens) but determined that any detectable levels in cosmetic products would be substantially below levels of concern. The FDA has also approved related polystyrene as a component in food-contact articles, subject to specific limits on residual styrene monomer. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) rates this ingredient low for cancer, allergies & immunotoxicity, and developmental and reproductive toxicity.
