Mechanism of Action
STEARDIMONIUM HYDROXYPROPYL HYDROLYZED SOY PROTEIN functions by supplying short-chain peptides and amino acids that mimic the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMF), thereby attracting and binding water. This forms a moisture-retentive film on the skin's surface, which reinforces the skin barrier and reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The peptides can also interact with keratin to enhance the skin matrix. Furthermore, its soy peptides and isoflavones offer antioxidant benefits, neutralizing free radicals and alleviating oxidative stress. Potential long-term effects include protection against photoaging, stimulation of cell renewal, and increased production of hyaluronic acid and collagen, contributing to improved skin elasticity and a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Stability
This ingredient is water-soluble. For optimal storage stability, a pH of 6.0 is often preferred for soy protein isolates, although maximal solubility can be achieved at pH 7.2. Increased protein solubility has also been observed in highly acidic (pH 2.0) or alkaline (pH 9.0) conditions.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that soy proteins and peptides, including this derivative, are safe for cosmetic use. While soy is a known food allergen, dermal exposure is not a concern as the ingredients are water-soluble, do not significantly penetrate the skin, and have molecular weights too low to induce Type I allergic reactions via skin contact. Studies have demonstrated no skin irritation or allergic reactions in animals or human subjects at concentrations up to 25%. In face and neck skincare, it is typically used at concentrations up to 4%.
