Mechanism of Action
This extract operates through a multifaceted approach to skin health. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, effectively scavenging free radicals and mitigating oxidative stress. Its anti-inflammatory capabilities are demonstrated by its ability to reduce redness, suppress proinflammatory chemokine production, and inhibit inflammatory mediators such as NO and TNF-α, partly via inhibition of MAPK/STAT1/NF-κB activation. Furthermore, it directly inhibits human neutrophil elastase activity, an enzyme contributing to collagen and elastin degradation. The extract also provides protection against UVB-induced photo-aging by reducing reactive oxygen species generation, preventing cellular damage, and positively influencing the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), collagen type I alpha 1 (COL1A1), elastin (ELN), and hyaluronan synthase 2 (HAS2). Beyond these, it functions as a skin emollient, promoting a smoother texture and helping to even out skin tone.

Key findings
- 01 Inhibited human neutrophil elastase (HNE) activity (IC50) with a phenolic extract containing 81.4% phenolic contents.
- 02 Aqueous and ethanolic extracts decreased UVB-stimulated reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by approximately 11% and 18%, respectively, in HaCaT cells.
- 03 Showed 79% inhibition of elastase activity.
- 04 Suppressed proinflammatory chemokine production in IFN-γ/TNF-α–stimulated HaCaT cells (in vitro).
- 05 Ameliorated atopic dermatitis–like symptoms, including ear thickness, dermatitis score, and epidermal thickness, in Dermatophagoides farina extract (DfE)–treated NC/Nga mice (in vivo).
