SODIUM TREHALOSE SULFATE.

Valuable CAS - / HUMECTANT, SKIN CONDITIONING

Sodium Trehalose Sulfate is a specialized sugar derivative engineered to significantly enhance skin hydration and reinforce the epidermal barrier. It actively supports the skin's natural moisturizing factors, leading to a measurable reduction in transepidermal water loss and improved overall skin resilience.

humectant moisturising water-binding

Science

This ingredient operates by modulating critical epidermal processes at a molecular level. It upregulates mRNA expression of ATP-binding cassette subfamily A member 12 (ABCA12), vital for lipid transport into the stratum granulosum, and filaggrin (FLG), a precursor to Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs). Furthermore, it increases enzymes (caspase-14, calpain-1, bleomycin hydrolase) involved in FLG degradation for NMF generation. In 3D skin models, it boosts key proteins like ABCA12, ceramide, transglutaminase1, and FLG, while inducing involucrin (IVL) and transglutaminase1 (TGM1) in the stratum granulosum and upper spinous layers, collectively promoting cellular differentiation for superior barrier function and increased stratum corneum water content.

Key findings

  1. 01 A 4-week facial application of a lotion and emulsion containing 0.05% sodium trehalose sulfate decreased transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and increased stratum corneum water content, effectively ameliorating dry skin.
  2. 02 Application of sodium trehalose sulfate solutions to 3D epidermis models significantly increased free amino acid content, indicating enhanced intrinsic moisturizing factors.
