Mechanism of Action
This ingredient is formed by combining fatty acids from olive oil with glutamic acid. On the skin, it acts as a mild cleansing agent and emulsifier, while its olive oil components, rich in oleic and linoleic acids, deliver emollient and epidermis-restoring properties. This mechanism supports improved skin barrier functionality, sustained hydration, and maintains the homeostasis of the hydrolipidic film, contributing to a 'second skin' effect and soft touch.

Key findings
- 01 Skin barrier restoration was observed at 5% and 1.7% active matter concentrations.
- 02 A significant reduction in Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL) was noted at 1.7% active matter, indicating a distinct moisturizing action.
- 03 At 2-5%, it effectively mitigates the aggressiveness of sulfates/sulfonates, yielding TEWL scores comparable to physiological water.
- 04 Enhanced skin softness after use was reported at a 25% concentration.
- 05 It functions effectively as an emulsifier in oil-in-water skincare products within a range of 3-8%, with specific concentrations dependent on the oil phase percentage.
- 06 Targeted efficacy for sensitive skin was demonstrated at 1.7% active matter.

Stability
The ingredient performs optimally within a pH range of 4.5-8.0. For transparent products exceeding 5% concentration, a pH of 5.5-8.0 is advised; at concentrations below 5%, it tolerates lower pH values down to 4.5. The optimal stability for finished products typically spans pH 5-7. It can be added to the aqueous phase before heating or at the end of emulsification at room temperature, supporting both cold and hot processing up to 70°C.
Conflicts
- Cationic surfactants, unless pre-solubilized with amphoteric surfactants to prevent chemical neutralization.
Safety
Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel concluded that Sodium Olivoyl Glutamate is safe for cosmetic use when formulated to be non-irritating. It has shown non-irritating results in Red Blood Cell tests and is recognized for its low irritation concerns. A maximum use concentration of 70% as a primary surfactant has been reported.
