Mechanism of Action
Sodium Carboxymethyl Beta-Glucan operates as a key immunomodulator, actively stimulating the skin's intrinsic defense systems to enhance protection against environmental aggressors, pathogens, and inflammatory responses. It significantly accelerates wound healing and boosts collagen synthesis, leading to improved skin texture and a visible reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Furthermore, this ingredient establishes a protective barrier on the skin, effectively retaining moisture and shielding against external factors like pollution and UV radiation. It also exhibits antioxidant properties by neutralizing damaging free radicals and offers substantial soothing capabilities, which collectively empower the skin's self-repair mechanisms and reduce sensitivity.

Stability
This ingredient maintains excellent stability across a broad pH range of 3.0 to 8.0, ensuring compatibility with a wide array of active ingredients, including AHAs and Vitamin C. For complete dissolution and to prevent clumping, it should be slowly incorporated into the cold or room temperature aqueous phase using high shear mixing. To preserve the integrity of its polysaccharide structure, prolonged exposure to temperatures above 70°C must be avoided.

Safety
Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel has determined Sodium Carboxymethyl Beta-Glucan, along with other microbial polysaccharide gums, to be safe for use in cosmetic formulations under current practices. It is generally well-tolerated and known for its gentle nature. While considered safe, rare individual reactions such as itching, rash, or redness may occur, particularly in highly sensitive individuals, who should conduct a sensitivity test prior to use. Primary skin and eye irritation, and skin sensitization tests, typically show no significant toxicity. A toxicological assessment of a food-grade powder (≥90% CMBG) indicated no mutagenicity and no observed adverse effects in rats at oral doses up to 2000 mg/kg body weight/day.
