SESAME AMINO ACIDS.

Valuable / HUMECTANT

Derived from the nourishing sesame seed, Sesame Amino Acids are fundamental building blocks for crucial skin proteins, enhancing elasticity and structural integrity. This ingredient actively boosts skin hydration, supports robust cellular repair, and provides a defensive shield against environmental damage, fostering a visibly healthier and more resilient complexion.

Science

Sesame Amino Acids serve as critical precursors for foundational skin proteins like collagen and elastin, which are vital for maintaining skin's structural integrity and elasticity. They effectively function as humectants, drawing and retaining moisture to significantly improve skin hydration and reinforce the epidermal barrier. Beyond hydration, they actively support cellular repair processes and provide robust antioxidant protection by neutralizing free radicals. Furthermore, specific compounds such as sesamin, derived from sesame, are demonstrated to reduce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), inhibit the overexpression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) which degrade collagen, and increase the expression of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), thereby offering comprehensive protection against photodamage and promoting endogenous collagen synthesis.

Stability

The solubility of sesame protein isolate, from which amino acids are derived, is highly pH-dependent. Solubility is minimized at its isoelectric point, approximately pH 4-5.5, and reaches peak solubility at pH 10. For enhanced solubility and stability in formulations, it is recommended to formulate outside the pH range of 4-5.5, favoring either more acidic (below 4) or alkaline (above 5.5) conditions.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that plant-derived amino acids, including Sesame Amino Acids, are safe in current cosmetic practices and concentrations, provided the final formulations are non-irritating. Dermal tests on α-amino acids generally indicated little to no irritation. Furthermore, the FDA recognizes L-amino acids as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for direct food additive uses, underscoring a strong safety profile.
