Mechanism of Action
This extract operates through a multi-faceted approach to enhance skin health. It significantly reduces inflammation by inhibiting PGE2 production and suppressing COX-2 expression, key mediators in inflammatory responses. Its rich profile of lignans acts as powerful antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals and offering protection against environmental stressors and UVB radiation by potentially blocking inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and IL-18. Schisandrin specifically enhances skin barrier integrity and mitigates inflammation, while Schizandrin B may regulate superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and lower matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) expression, thereby protecting collagen. Essential fatty acids and polysaccharides deliver vital hydration and reinforce the skin's lipid barrier, while vitamins C and E contribute to a brighter, more radiant complexion. Furthermore, it exerts an anti-melanogenesis effect through potent tyrosinase inhibition and stimulates endogenous antioxidant defenses by promoting glutathione production.

Key findings
- 01 At a concentration of 0.2 µg/mL, an SC-CO2 extract exhibited strong inhibition of prostaglandin production via cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in a cell-free enzymatic assay.
- 02 UVB-induced PGE2 production and COX-2 expression in HaCaT keratinocytes were notably reduced by an SC-CO2 extract at 4 µg/mL.
- 03 A non-polar extract inhibited epidermal cell proliferation (HaCaT and A431 cells) with an IC50 of 20 µg/mL.
- 04 An aqueous extract, at 50 µg/mL, stimulated HaCaT cell proliferation, showing up to a 150% increase compared to controls.
- 05 Aqueous extracts demonstrated significant tyrosinase inhibition, ranging from 96.2% to 98.5%, at 50 µg/mL.
- 06 In a model body wash formulation, 3% (w/w) aqueous extract reduced skin irritant potential by up to 16%.

Stability
The CO2-extracted oil form maintains stability for one year when stored in a sealed container, protected from light and kept in cool conditions.
Safety
Safety Profile
Formal safety reviews by CIR, SCCS, or FDA are not yet available. In vitro studies showed no cytotoxic effects on HaCaT cells at aqueous extract concentrations up to 200 µg/mL. Furthermore, model body wash gels containing 3% (w/w) of the aqueous extract demonstrated a reduction in skin irritant potential.
