Mechanism of Action
This extract primarily functions through its potent antioxidant capacity, scavenging free radicals and reducing intracellular Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) levels. It exerts anti-inflammatory effects by decreasing the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α). Furthermore, it acts as a photoprotective agent, mitigating UVB-induced damage and inhibiting extracellular matrix degradation enzymes like MMP-1, 3, and 9. Its anti-aging benefits stem from inhibiting collagenase and elastase activity, crucial for maintaining skin integrity. Regarding pigmentation, the extract presents a dual mechanism: it can inhibit tyrosinase and downregulate MITF/TRP-1 via the ERK-MAPK pathway for anti-melanogenesis, but also, through other pathways (cAMP/PKA/CREB), increase melanin content and tyrosinase activity, potentially for repigmentation.
