Mechanism of Action
Salix tetrasperma bark extract contains a blend of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic compounds, tannins, and polyphenols. Notably, it also contains salicin, a precursor to salicylic acid. Upon application, salicin can be converted into salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), which facilitates gentle chemical exfoliation. This action aids in dissolving excess sebum, promoting cellular turnover by shedding dead skin cells, and decongesting pores. Furthermore, the extract demonstrates anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, which contribute to reducing visible redness and irritation. Its antioxidant capacity aids in neutralizing free radicals, thereby protecting skin from environmental aggressors. The extract also contributes to balancing sebaceous gland activity, refining the appearance of pores, and enhancing skin hydration and barrier function. In vitro studies have also identified its ability to inhibit quorum sensing and virulence factors of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, suggesting a targeted antimicrobial benefit.

Safety Profile
While a human repeat insult patch test (HRIPT) on a serum containing 0.0025% Salix Alba Bark Extract indicated it was non-irritating and non-sensitizing, direct specific safety data for Salix tetrasperma is limited. Individuals with known hypersensitivity to aspirin (salicylates) should exercise caution due to the extract's inherent salicin content. General recommendations for willow bark extracts suggest avoiding use in children, pregnant or nursing women, and those with specific medical conditions such as active peptic ulcers, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, severe liver or kidney dysfunction, or coagulation disorders. Acute toxicity studies of aqueous S. tetrasperma bark extract in albino rats demonstrated no mortality at tested doses.
