Mechanism of Action
This extract exerts its dermatological effects through several precise pathways. It significantly reduces intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhances the activity of key endogenous antioxidant enzymes, including catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase. Furthermore, it modulates inflammatory cascades by downregulating the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and inflammatory chemokines, partly via inhibition of the NF-κB pathway. For anti-aging benefits, it specifically inhibits the UVB-induced production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-1, MMP-8, and MMP-13), which are enzymes responsible for collagen degradation, while simultaneously augmenting cellular procollagen/collagen levels in dermal fibroblasts. It also strengthens the skin barrier by increasing the mRNA expression of crucial proteins like filaggrin and involucrin.
