ROSIN.

Avoid CAS 8050-09-7 / BINDING, FILM FORMING, VISCOSITY CONTROLLING

Rosin, also known as colophony, is a natural resin primarily composed of abietic-type acids. It functions in cosmetic formulations as a binder, film-former, and viscosity controller. While its esters offer emollient and stabilizing properties, raw rosin is widely recognized for its potent sensitizing potential.

Science

Rosin primarily acts as a binding agent, enhancing the cohesion of powdered cosmetic products. It also forms a continuous film on skin, hair, or nails, and aids in controlling product viscosity. As a tackifier, it improves adhesion in formulations. Rosin acids exhibit antibacterial effects by disrupting bacterial cell walls, while chemically modified rosin esters can serve as emollients, stabilizers, and texture modifiers.

Key findings

  1. 01 Clinical patch testing at 20% concentration in petrolatum is routinely used to identify individuals sensitive to rosin, confirming its ability to cause allergic contact dermatitis.
  2. 02 Sensitization to gum rosin has been observed in a dose-response manner during patch tests, with reactions occurring at concentrations as low as 0.001%.
  3. 03 In contrast, chemically modified glyceryl rosinate showed no signs of skin irritation or sensitization in 25 subjects at 4.0% concentration in a foundation, and in 27 subjects at 2.0% in blush and lip gloss products.
  4. 04 However, a purified ester gum containing 50% glyceryl rosinate, with an effective concentration of 10% in a 20% mixture, caused skin irritation and sensitization in 1 out of 49 subjects during repeat insult patch testing (RIPT).

Rosin is a well-documented contact allergen, classified as a skin sensitizer by the EU. Its sensitizing potential can manifest at extremely low concentrations, with dose-response relationships observed down to 0.001%. Oxidized forms of rosin are particularly potent sensitisers, making it a significant red flag for inclusion in precision skincare formulations despite chemical modification attempts to reduce its allergic activity.

Stability

Rosin and its derivatives are generally insoluble in water at neutral or acidic pH (2-7), requiring alkaline conditions (pH 10) to form salts and achieve water solubility. Oxidation significantly impacts rosin's stability, leading to discoloration and increased sensitizing potential. Chemical modifications can improve water solubility and enhance bioinhibitory performance.

Conflicts

  • Sensitive skin types, due to high sensitizing potential, especially with oxidized forms.
  • Certain plasticizers, which can lead to phase separation within formulations.
  • Specific biocides or preservatives, potentially interfering with rosin-based material dispersion properties.

Rosin (colophony) is a well-known contact allergen and is classified as a skin sensitizer by the EU. Oxidized rosins are particularly potent sensitisers. While chemical modifications, such as hydrogenation and esterification, can reduce its sensitizing potential, some residual activity may persist. The CIR Expert Panel concluded that glyceryl monoesters (e.g., glyceryl rosinate, glyceryl hydrogenated rosinate) are safe as cosmetic ingredients when formulated to be non-sensitizing. However, due to widespread allergy concerns, rosin is becoming less prevalent in cosmetic products.

Our Assessment

Avoid

Due to its high potential for allergic contact dermatitis and classification as a skin sensitizer, particularly in its raw or oxidized forms, rosin is strongly advised against for precision skincare formulations.
