Rosin primarily acts as a binding agent, enhancing the cohesion of powdered cosmetic products. It also forms a continuous film on skin, hair, or nails, and aids in controlling product viscosity. As a tackifier, it improves adhesion in formulations. Rosin acids exhibit antibacterial effects by disrupting bacterial cell walls, while chemically modified rosin esters can serve as emollients, stabilizers, and texture modifiers.

- 01 Clinical patch testing at 20% concentration in petrolatum is routinely used to identify individuals sensitive to rosin, confirming its ability to cause allergic contact dermatitis.
- 02 Sensitization to gum rosin has been observed in a dose-response manner during patch tests, with reactions occurring at concentrations as low as 0.001%.
- 03 In contrast, chemically modified glyceryl rosinate showed no signs of skin irritation or sensitization in 25 subjects at 4.0% concentration in a foundation, and in 27 subjects at 2.0% in blush and lip gloss products.

The CIR Expert Panel concluded that glyceryl monoesters (e.g., glyceryl rosinate, glyceryl hydrogenated rosinate) are safe as cosmetic ingredients when formulated to be non-sensitizing. However, due to widespread allergy concerns, rosin is becoming less prevalent in cosmetic products.
