Mechanism of Action
This extract exerts its effects through a complex profile of active compounds, including gallotannins, phenolic acids like free gallic acid, methyl gallate, fisetin, and pentagalloylglucose. These constituents are responsible for potent antioxidant action, mitigating oxidative stress, and substantial anti-inflammatory properties that calm irritation and prevent allergic responses. Furthermore, it possesses antimicrobial and antiviral activities. In the context of hair biology, it specifically enhances the proliferation of Human Dermal Papilla Cells (HDPCs), activates the crucial Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and upregulates key hair growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF). It additionally inhibits dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-mediated DKK-1 secretion and protects against H2O2-mediated cytotoxicity.

Key findings
- 01 In vitro studies on Human Dermal Papilla Cells (HDPCs) demonstrated that a water-soluble fraction of Rhus semialata gall extract (WRGE), at concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 100 µg/mL, significantly promoted cell proliferation. These studies also observed activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, upregulation of hair growth factors (VEGF, IGF-1, FGF), and inhibition of DHT-mediated DKK-1 secretion and H2O2-mediated cytotoxicity.
- 02 Clinical trials further substantiated these findings, showing significant improvements in hair density and visual hair appearance scores in participants treated with WRGE compared to a placebo group. However, the precise percentage of WRGE within the clinical formulation was not specified.
