RETINYL LINOLEATE.

Valuable CAS 631-89-0 / SKIN CONDITIONING

Retinyl Linoleate is a gentle vitamin A ester, combining retinol with linoleic acid. It gradually converts in the skin to deliver the well-known benefits of retinol, such as enhanced cell turnover and collagen production, while simultaneously providing barrier-strengthening and hydrating properties from linoleic acid.

Antioxidant Skin-Restoring Emollient Skin-Conditioning

Science

Upon topical application, Retinyl Linoleate undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis within the skin, releasing active retinol and linoleic acid. Retinol then stimulates fibroblast activity to increase collagen synthesis, accelerates epidermal cell renewal, and facilitates the shedding of dead skin cells, leading to improvements in skin texture, elasticity, and the appearance of fine lines. It also contributes antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. Concurrently, linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid, is crucial for maintaining a robust skin barrier and serves as a precursor for ceramide synthesis, thereby boosting skin hydration and mitigating the dryness or irritation often associated with traditional retinoids.

Stability

Retinyl Linoleate demonstrates superior stability in cosmetic formulations and offers improved shelf-life compared to pure retinol. Nevertheless, its polyene structure remains susceptible to degradation by light and oxygen. For optimal raw material preservation, storage under an inert atmosphere at -86°C is advised.

Regulatory bodies, including the SCCS, deem vitamin A compounds like Retinyl Linoleate safe in cosmetics up to 0.05% Retinol Equivalent (RE) in body lotions and 0.3% RE in other leave-on and rinse-off products. However, concerns from the FDA and German health agencies highlight the potential for excessive systemic vitamin A intake from daily topical application, particularly for pregnant individuals, rendering it unsuitable for use during pregnancy. The Canadian Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist further restricts its use to 0.2% RE for full-body leave-on products and up to 1% RE in other categories.
