Science
Mechanism of Action
This extract primarily operates through its active flavonoid compounds, notably luteolin and apigenin. Luteolin exerts anti-inflammatory effects by modulating the MAPK pathway, effectively decreasing UVB-induced erythema and inhibiting inflammatory mediators like cyclooxygenase-2 and prostaglandin E₂ production. It also functions as a potent antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and offering DNA protection. Furthermore, its ability to chelate copper at the active site of the tyrosinase enzyme contributes to its skin-whitening capabilities.

Key findings
- 01 A 2.5% nanoparticular solubilisate of a luteolin-rich extract was clinically shown to dose-dependently reduce UVB-induced erythema in vivo, demonstrating efficacy comparable to 1% hydrocortisone. This formulation also exhibited excellent skin tolerance without irritation under occlusive application on non-irradiated skin.
- 02 In vitro bioassays revealed that Reseda luteola extract significantly inhibited melanin production (42% whitening activity), reduced inflammation (54%), and demonstrated strong antioxidant capacity (67%).

Stability
The flavonoid components within the extract, particularly luteolin, exhibit enhanced stability at approximately pH 3. The extract itself shows good solubility in polar solvents, being readily extracted with water (especially at alkaline pH) or methanol-water mixtures.

Safety Profile
While formal safety assessments by CIR or SCCS are not yet available, a clinical study utilizing a 2.5% solubilized extract demonstrated excellent skin tolerance and no irritation, even under occlusive conditions. Comprehensive toxicological studies are still recommended for broader cosmetic application.
