PUNICA GRANATUM FLOWER EXTRACT.

Insufficient Data CAS 84961-57-9 / SKIN CONDITIONING

Punica Granatum Flower Extract is a botanical powerhouse, rich in triterpenes and polyphenols, revered for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities. It actively supports collagen production for enhanced skin elasticity, visibly reduces wrinkles, and shows promise in wound healing and sebum regulation.

Science

This extract operates through a multifaceted biological pathway, leveraging its high concentration of triterpenes (ursolic acid and oleanolic acid) and polyphenols (gallic acid and ellagic acid). It exhibits robust antioxidant activity by efficiently scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) like superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals, along with reactive nitrogen species (RNS) such as nitric oxide, thereby mitigating oxidative cellular damage. The extract promotes collagen synthesis, which contributes to improved skin elasticity and a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Its hydrolysable tannins may modulate sebum production, offering benefits for oil-prone skin, while polyphenols like punicalagin and ellagic acid are believed to inhibit NF-kappa B activity and melanin formation, potentially guarding against UV-induced pigmentation. A high tannin content, up to 48.7%, is thought to accelerate wound healing via processes including wound contraction, granulation, epithelialization, and collagenation.

Key findings

  1. 01 A 2020 study indicated that topical application of pomegranate flower extract helped to decrease lip wrinkles and enhance lip volume.
  2. 02 In a 2017 study, pomegranate flower extract applied topically was demonstrated to facilitate the healing of scars and wounds in rats.
  3. 03 An oral supplement, a proprietary Punica granatum extract (Grantria®) standardized to specific compounds, taken at 300 mg/day, significantly reduced crow's feet and forehead wrinkles, improved tactile roughness, skin radiance, tone evenness, moisturization, elasticity, and firmness over 60 days in a randomized, placebo-controlled human study. However, this study involved an orally ingested, general Punica granatum extract, not specifically the flower extract for topical use.

Stability

An aqueous extract of pomegranate flower is observed to be less responsive to alkaline pH. General Punica Granatum extracts are typically acidic, often noted around pH 3.0 to 4.0.

CIR Status
Insufficient data
Sensitization risk Unknown

In May 2020, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel determined that available data for Punica Granatum Flower Extract was insufficient to establish its safety for use in cosmetic formulations. The Panel identified a need for additional data on manufacturing methods, composition, impurities, systemic toxicity, dermal irritation, sensitization, and a no-observed-effect-level (NOEL) for potential skin lightening effects. While general Punica granatum extracts are considered Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for food by the FDA, this status does not specifically extend to the cosmetic application of the flower extract.

Our Assessment

Insufficient Data

Punica Granatum Flower Extract demonstrates promising antioxidant, anti-aging, and skin-healing benefits based on mechanistic understanding and some preliminary topical studies; however, comprehensive safety data for its use in cosmetic formulations is currently insufficient, necessitating further research.
