Mechanism of Action
This ingredient functions by enhancing the skin's endogenous protective mechanisms against oxidative damage. It has been shown to dose-dependently decrease reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, while concurrently elevating the activity of crucial antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). Its composition includes phenolic compounds like caffeoyl glucoside and prunasinamide, which further contribute to its ROS-scavenging capabilities. The anti-inflammatory effect is evidenced by its capacity to reduce nitric oxide (NO) production, thereby helping to calm inflamed skin. Furthermore, it exerts anti-apoptotic effects, effectively preventing UVB-induced cellular death and regulating key proteins (Bcl-2, Bcl-2-associated X, cytochrome-c, and caspase-3) essential for cell viability. Preliminary data also suggests potential skin brightening attributes.

Key findings
- 01 In vitro studies using UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells demonstrated that Prunus Yedoensis flower extract, at concentrations ranging from 0.5% to 2.0%, dose-dependently reduced markers of oxidative stress (ROS, MDA) and simultaneously enhanced the activity of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GSH-Px). At concentrations of 1% and 2%, the extract also attenuated UVB-induced DNA damage and prevented cellular apoptosis.
- 02 An in vitro investigation revealed that 2% cherry blossom extract significantly reduced nitric oxide (NO) production by 31.83% compared to a placebo, indicating a robust anti-inflammatory response.
- 03 An in vivo Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) irritant patch test evaluated a cream containing 3% cherry blossom extract, observing lower visual irritation scores and erythema values on days 5 and 9 compared to a placebo, thereby confirming its anti-inflammatory efficacy in a clinical setting.
