Mechanism of Action
This extract operates through multiple pathways to enhance skin health. As an anti-inflammatory, it reduces nitric oxide (NO) production and inhibits inflammatory markers like TNF-α and IL6, while modulating MAPK signaling. Its antioxidant capacity stems from compounds such as amygdalin, prunasin, and various phenolic compounds (e.g., kaempferol derivatives, caffeoyl glucoside), which neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and boost endogenous antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPx). For anti-aging, it safeguards against photoaging by reducing sUV-induced Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 expression, preventing UVB-induced DNA damage and apoptosis, and inhibiting the glycation process. Furthermore, it aids in skin brightening by suppressing tyrosinase activity to decrease melanin production and supports skin renewal. The presence of vitamins A, B, and E contributes to barrier strengthening and repair.

Key findings
- 01 Protected HaCaT cells from UVB-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis, with 1% and 2% concentrations significantly attenuating UVB-induced DNA damage in vitro.
- 02 Reduced nitric oxide (NO) production by 31.83% in LPS-treated RAW 264.7 cells in vitro, demonstrating an anti-inflammatory effect.
- 03 Reduced visual scores and erythema values in an SLS irritant patch test on human forearms, confirming an anti-inflammatory effect in vivo.

Stability
The extract is water-soluble and is often prepared in water or water/propanediol mixtures. Optimal stability for its beneficial polyphenolic compounds, including anthocyanins, is typically observed within a pH range of 4-5. High temperatures exceeding 70°C or prolonged processing times can lead to oxidation and degradation of these sensitive components.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has not yet reviewed this specific extract. However, EWG Skin Deep rates Prunus Yedoensis Flower Extract as 'LOW' for general health concerns, including cancer, allergies & immunotoxicity, and developmental & reproductive toxicity, noting it is not on their Restricted or Unacceptable Lists. Related Prunus extracts, such as Prunus Serrulata (Japanese cherry blossom), are generally considered safe for cosmetic use, with rare instances of individual allergic reactions.
