Mechanism of Action
As a member of the PPG Butyl Ether family, PPG-22 Butyl Ether acts as a conditioning agent for both skin and hair. It helps to form a protective film, improving the visual and tactile qualities of dry or damaged skin by mitigating flakiness and enhancing smoothness. For hair, it contributes to increased body, suppleness, and sheen, thereby improving the overall feel and appearance, particularly for damaged strands.

Key findings
- 01 In a comprehensive safety assessment including PPG-22 Butyl Ether, a related compound, PPG BE800 (with 12-14 propylene glycol units), was found to be noncarcinogenic in rats over a 2-year period at dietary concentrations ranging from 0.001% to 0.26%.
- 02 PPG BE800 demonstrated non-irritating and non-sensitizing properties on human skin in clinical studies involving 200 subjects.
- 03 A related ingredient, PPG-40 Butyl Ether, was confirmed as neither an irritant nor a sensitizer in a repeat-insult patch test conducted with 112 subjects.

Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel determined PPG-22 Butyl Ether, along with numerous other PPG Butyl Ethers, to be safe for cosmetic and personal care use, provided formulations are designed to prevent irritation. While animal studies on PPG-2 Butyl Ether (a smaller variant) indicated minor, transient irritation, extensive clinical testing for the broader group (including PPG-22) showed no significant skin irritation when appropriately formulated. Smaller PPG Butyl Ethers generally exhibit higher potential for skin absorption. Specific maximum usage concentrations for PPG-22 Butyl Ether are not detailed, but PPG-40 Butyl Ether has been reported in leave-on hair wax at concentrations up to 71%.
