Mechanism of Action
This extract exerts its antioxidant action through the potent radical scavenging and ferric reducing power of its phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Specifically, triterpenoids like 2α-hydroxyursolic acid function via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and single electron transfer (SET) mechanisms. Anti-inflammatory effects are mediated by inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) production and downregulating pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6. Key compounds, including 3β-O-acetyl-12-oleanen-28-oic acid and a flavonoid glycoside, are suggested to inhibit PDE4B, thereby increasing intracellular cAMP and reducing inflammatory pathways. Additionally, it displays antifungal and antibacterial activities, attributed to its diverse phytochemical profile including alkaloids, polyphenols, tannins, and glycosides.

Key findings
- 01 An anti-acne formula containing Pouzolzia zeylanica extract was effective in rapidly clearing acne symptoms: mild cases resolved in approximately 4 days, moderate in 8 days, and severe in 15 days.
- 02 A methanolic extract demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity, achieving 78.86% inhibition in an animal model at 500 mg/kg body weight (oral). In vitro, isolated triterpenoids and flavonoid glycosides significantly inhibited NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 production at micromolar (µM) concentrations (e.g., IC50 20.86 ± 1.42 µM for NO inhibition by 3β-O-acetyl-12-oleanen-28-oic acid).
- 03 Potent antioxidant activity was observed, with isolated triterpenoids showing significant free radical scavenging (e.g., IC50 18.52 ± 1.50 µM for DPPH by 2α-hydroxyursolic acid).
- 04 An ethanol extract exhibited strong antifungal activity against various strains, notably *Aspergillus niger*, with zones of inhibition ranging from 7.0 to 26 mm.

Safety Profile
No formal CIR, SCCS, or FDA safety assessment for topical application currently exists. Oral toxicity studies in lab mice indicated no toxicity at very high doses (10 g/kg body weight) for an ethanol extract. Traditional use of the plant has been reported without specified adverse effects, though detailed safety profiles for cosmetic application are pending.
