POTASSIUM OLIVOYL PCA.

Valuable CAS - / CLEANSING, HUMECTANT

Potassium Olivoyl PCA is a unique biomimetic amino acid derivative formed from olive oil fatty acids and pyroglutamic acid (PCA). It functions as a versatile ingredient, enhancing skin moisturization, supporting barrier function, and offering gentle cleansing properties. Its dual nature renders it beneficial across both leave-on and rinse-off formulations.

Science

This ingredient acts as a condensate of olive oil fatty acids and the potassium salt of pyroglutamic acid (PCA). On skin, hydrolytic enzymes facilitate its breakdown into essential fatty acids and PCA, both critical for maintaining healthy skin. It primarily functions as an emollient, significantly reducing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and actively restoring the epidermal barrier, thereby combating dry skin and exfoliation. As an alkyl-amino-acid, it also serves as a mild co-surfactant, enhancing the gentleness of primary detergents by preserving the skin's hydrolipidic film and minimizing their irritating potential. The PCA component, a natural moisturizing factor (NMF) constituent, further optimizes water pathways within the skin to ensure balanced hydration.

Key findings

  1. 01 A 5% concentration in leave-on systems significantly enhanced skin moisturization, elasticity, and emolliency, outperforming a placebo.
  2. 02 In rinse-off applications, a 5% concentration demonstrated superior reduction in sulfate tension, roughness, and dryness compared to a mild surfactant benchmark.
  3. 03 A 1% concentration in rinse-off systems provided foam-boosting action comparable to Cocamide DEA.

Stability

Optimal stability and performance are achieved within a pH range of 4.5 to 8.0. For formulations requiring transparency, a pH of 5.5 or higher is recommended. When utilized as a secondary surfactant at concentrations below 5%, it exhibits tolerance for lower pH values down to 4.5. However, at pH values below 5.5, particularly when employed as a primary/co-primary surfactant or at concentrations exceeding 5%, a reduction in solubility may occur, leading to haziness or a loss of formulation clarity.

Conflicts

  • Cationic surfactants. To prevent chemical neutralization, it is recommended to pre-solubilize cationic surfactants with amphoteric surfactants prior to the addition of Potassium Olivoyl PCA, given its anionic nature.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has not specifically reviewed Potassium Olivoyl PCA. However, PCA and its salts, including Potassium PCA, have been deemed safe for cosmetic use, with a caveat against use in products containing N-nitrosating agents. Suppliers recommend usage levels for Potassium Olivoyl PCA up to 10% when functioning as an active ingredient and up to 5% as a gentle surfactant. It is generally recognized for its low potential for irritation and sensitization.
