While one human repeated-insult patch test (HRIPT) with a 10% aqueous solution identified allergic contact sensitization in 2 out of 168 subjects and cumulative irritation in an additional 2 subjects, a broader spectrum of studies indicated non-irritating to mildly irritating effects at concentrations ranging from 2% to 100% in humans. The base component, hydrolyzed collagen, is classified as safe by the FDA. Current reported maximum usage concentrations are 20% in rinse-off products (e.g., shampoos) and 0.01% in leave-on facial and moisturizing products.
