Mechanism of Action
This ingredient operates on multiple levels: As an emulsifier, its unique molecular structure, featuring both lipophilic and hydrophilic parts, effectively lowers interfacial tension to create stable oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions, improving product spreadability and skin feel. On the skin, it functions as an emollient by forming a protective lipid barrier, which minimizes transepidermal water loss and enhances skin smoothness by filling microscopic gaps. Furthermore, it acts as a surfactant, assisting in cleansing by reducing surface tension to lift impurities, and contributes as a stabilizer to ensure uniform product consistency.

Stability
Polyglyceryl-2 Sesquistearate exhibits high chemical stability and is suitable for cold-process emulsification. While generally stable across a wide pH range, ester hydrolysis may occur at extreme pH values or elevated temperatures. It is soluble in oils and organic solvents, but demonstrates limited solubility in water. It is compatible with a broad spectrum of cosmetic ingredients, including synthetic oils, fatty acid esters, triglycerides, active compounds, and pigments.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that Polyglyceryl-2 Sesquistearate, part of a family of 273 polyglyceryl fatty acid esters, is safe for use in cosmetics under current practices and concentrations, provided formulations are non-irritating. Animal studies have indicated no significant oral or dermal toxicity, reproductive/developmental toxicity, genotoxicity, or carcinogenicity. This class of ingredients has also received approval as food additives. No specific maximum concentration was identified by the CIR for this ingredient.
