Mechanism of Action
This extract operates through multiple pathways to enhance skin health. It exhibits antioxidant activity, shielding the skin from free radical damage. Its anti-aging potential is realized by inhibiting melanin production and cellular tyrosinase activity, which helps reduce hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, it mitigates wrinkle formation by suppressing MMP-1 mRNA expression and elastase activity. Skin hydration is maintained by preventing the UVB-induced reduction of hyaluronic acid synthase-2 (HAS-2). The extract also demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory properties, suppressing key pro-inflammatory mediators like NO, PGE2, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, and inhibiting iNOS and COX-2. Photoprotective effects are observed through its ability to reduce intracellular melanin content by modulating the CREB/MITF/tyrosinase signaling pathway. Additionally, it contributes to skin barrier restoration, irritation reduction, cell regeneration, and microbiome balance, with active compounds including phenolic acids and lignans like methyl gallate.

Key findings
- 01 In vitro studies demonstrate the extract's ability to inhibit melanin production and cellular tyrosinase activity in B16F10 melanocytes, thereby addressing hyperpigmentation. It also effectively suppressed MMP-1 mRNA expression and reduced elastase activity in human dermal fibroblasts, contributing to wrinkle reduction. Furthermore, it prevented UVB-mediated downregulation of hyaluronic acid synthase-2 (HAS-2) gene expression in HaCaT keratinocytes, supporting the maintenance of skin hydration. The most pronounced suppressive effects on tyrosinase activity and MMP-1 expression were observed at concentrations between 25-50 µg/mL, equivalent to 0.0025%-0.005%, with effects diminishing beyond 50 µg/mL for these specific pathways. HAS-2 suppression exhibited a dose-dependent response.
