Science

This extract exerts its effects through multiple scientifically supported pathways. It acts as a potent antioxidant, actively scavenging free radicals to shield the skin from oxidative damage. The ingredient also plays a crucial role in restoring the skin barrier and balancing the skin's microbiome. Its anti-inflammatory actions are evident in the suppression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) induction, providing a soothing effect. Furthermore, its anti-aging potential is linked to inhibiting matrix metalloprotease (MMP) activity, boosting hyaluronic acid content, and suppressing tyrosinase, which collectively contribute to reducing hyperpigmentation and promoting skin cell regeneration.

Key findings

  1. 01 In vitro studies using aqueous extracts (PCWE) demonstrated significant photoprotective effects against UVB-mediated photodamage in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs), melanocytes (B16F10 cells), and keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) at concentrations of 25-200 μg/mL. Key findings included downregulation of MMP-1 expression and elastase activity in HDFs, upregulation of telomerase reverse transcriptase and hyaluronan synthase-2 in HaCaT cells, and suppression of melanin production and tyrosinase activity in B16F10 cells. No significant cytotoxicity was observed up to 200 μg/mL.
  2. 02 Ethanol extracts (PCE) at 25-50 μg/mL effectively inhibited melanin production and cellular tyrosinase activity in B16F10 melanocytes. They also suppressed MMP-1 mRNA expression and reduced elastase activity in HDFs, while mitigating UVB-induced downregulation of hyaluronic acid synthase-2 gene expression in HaCaT keratinocytes. PCE treatment showed no significant cytotoxicity up to 200 μg/mL over 24 hours.
