PEG-90M.

Valuable CAS 25322-68-3 / BINDING, EMULSION STABILISING, VISCOSITY CONTROLLING

PEG-90M is a high molecular weight polyethylene glycol polymer, valued for its dual functionality as a humectant and a rheology modifier. It effectively attracts and retains moisture on the skin while significantly improving the texture, stability, and overall performance of cosmetic formulations.

Viscosity controlling Emulsion stabilizing Humectant Binding Film-forming Emollient Solvent

Science

As a water-soluble polymer, PEG-90M operates by creating a film on the skin's surface, which actively draws water molecules from the environment and secures them within the topmost skin layer. This mechanism provides direct hydration and supports skin barrier function. Beyond its moisturizing capabilities, PEG-90M plays a crucial role in product formulation by binding diverse components, stabilizing emulsions to prevent phase separation, and precisely controlling viscosity to achieve desired textures. It also enhances product lubricity and facilitates the adsorption of other conditioning ingredients.

Stability

PEG-90M presents as a fine powder with inherent stability, resisting decomposition. Polyethylene glycols generally exhibit good skin tolerance and a wide range of viscosity and solubility properties. Optimal formulation stability for PEG-90M is achieved within a pH range of 4.5-6.0, based on hair mask applications, with related PEGs showing stability up to pH 7.0.

Synergies

  • Enhances the adsorption of other conditioning ingredients onto skin and hair, facilitating film formation.
  • Supports the performance of cationic ingredients by aiding their adsorption.

Conflicts

  • High shear or homogenization can degrade PEG-90M and similar long-chain polymers; dispersion in an insoluble medium (e.g., glycerin) followed by gentle stirring is recommended for hydration.
  • Specific rheological effects, such as a 'spider-web' texture, in formulations combining PEG-90M with acrylic polymers may be inhibited by certain cationic quats (e.g., behenyl quats).

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The CIR Expert Panel has determined that PEG ingredients, including PEG-90M, are safe for use in cosmetic products. Higher molecular weight PEGs (PEG-75 and above) are not absorbed through intact skin, presenting minimal irritation and sensitization risk. An initial caveat regarding use on damaged skin was later removed, as significant penetration only occurs with severe damage (second/third-degree burns). While minute amounts of 1,4-dioxane, a processing by-product, may be present, these levels are strictly controlled through purification. Despite its broad safety profile, PEGs are generally excluded from organic certified cosmetics due to their petrochemical origin and the energy-intensive ethoxylation process.
