PEG-8 DIMETHICONE/DIMER DILINOLEIC ACID COPOLYMER.

Valuable CAS - / SKIN CONDITIONING, SKIN CONDITIONING - EMOLLIENT

This versatile copolymer integrates a water-soluble silicone with a lipid-derived component, delivering comprehensive skin conditioning benefits. It forms a protective layer to enhance hydration, smooth skin texture, and improve the sensory feel of formulations.

Emollient Skin Conditioning Viscosity Controlling Emulsifying

Science

Functioning as an emollient and skin conditioner, this copolymer leverages the synergistic properties of its two primary constituents. The PEG-8 Dimethicone segment creates a breathable barrier on the skin's surface, effectively minimizing trans-epidermal water loss and boosting hydration, resulting in a soft, smooth feel. This component also contributes to diminishing the appearance of fine lines and enhances product aesthetics with its unique cushion and slip. Concurrently, the Dimer Dilinoleic Acid moiety, characteristic of dimer dilinoleates, provides additional emolliency, substantial skin lubrication, and moisturization. The combined action of these components ensures superior moisturization, skin smoothing, and an elevated sensory experience for both skin and hair.

Stability

This amphiphilic copolymer is designed to bridge oil, water, and silicone phases, functioning effectively as an emulsifier. Optimal stability is observed within a pH range of 5.5 to 8.5. For best integration into formulations, especially when incorporating into the water phase, temperatures exceeding 50°C (125°F) should be avoided; it is recommended to add it to emulsions once the temperature has cooled below 50°C.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has thoroughly assessed the safety of the individual components. Polyethylene Glycols (PEGs), including PEG-8, are generally considered well-tolerated by the skin, though some instances of mild sensitization or irritation have been noted, particularly in burn patients treated with PEG-based creams or with certain high concentrations of PEG derivatives. However, related PEG stearates have shown no irritation or sensitization up to 25%. Dimethicone has been concluded as safe by the CIR Expert Panel. Related Dialkyl Dimer Dilinoleates were also found safe for cosmetic use, with no adverse effects reported at concentrations up to 53% in lipsticks and 27% in irritation/sensitization tests, when properly formulated to be non-irritating. PEG-8 Dimethicone is confirmed as non-comedogenic. While a specific CIR assessment for this exact copolymer is not available, the robust safety profiles of its constituents strongly support its safety for use in cosmetic formulations.
