PEG-8 CETYL DIMETHICONE.

Valuable / SKIN CONDITIONING

PEG-8 Cetyl Dimethicone is a versatile silicone polymer that acts as a skin conditioning agent and emollient. It forms a lightweight, breathable film on the skin to enhance hydration and provide a silky texture, while also functioning as an effective oil-in-water emulsifier.

Science

This ingredient operates by forming a protective, vapor-permeable film across the skin's surface, effectively minimizing transepidermal water loss and thereby locking in moisture. This action results in enhanced skin hydration and a softened feel. Its amphiphilic structure, combining silicone and PEG components, also allows it to improve product spreadability, reduce tackiness, and stabilize oil-in-water emulsions.

Stability

For stable formulations, PEG-8 Cetyl Dimethicone should be incorporated within a pH range of 5.5 to 8.5. It is best added to the water phase. If hot processing, ensure the temperature drops below 50°C (122°F) before addition; do not exceed 50°C (125°F). Stability may be enhanced with decreased water solubility, increased molecular weight (>10,000), and higher concentrations (1% to 5%) for related ingredients.

Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that Cetyl PEG-8 Dimethicone is safe for use in cosmetics under current practices and concentrations. For the related PEG-8 Dimethicone, the CIR deemed concentrations from 0.024% to 5.6% safe. Potential contaminants such as Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclotetrasiloxane, Ethylene Oxide, and 1,4-Dioxane may be a concern. A closely related compound, Bis-cetyl/PEG-8 cetyl PEG-8 dimethicone, showed dermal irritation at 100% concentration in a rabbit study, but PEG-8 Cetyl Dimethicone is generally well-tolerated in typical cosmetic concentrations. PEG-related compounds are largely recognized as safe for limited food use by the FDA.
