PEG-75 STEARATE.

Valuable CAS 9004-99-3 / SURFACTANT - CLEANSING

PEG-75 Stearate is a polyoxyethylene ester of stearic acid, primarily utilized in skincare formulations for its critical role as an emulsifier and surfactant. This versatile ingredient ensures the harmonious blend of oil and water phases, contributing to stable and texturally refined products.

emulsifier surfactant cleansing agent

Science

As an ester blend of polyethylene glycol and stearic acid, PEG-75 Stearate functions by lowering the surface tension between immiscible liquids, thereby stabilizing emulsions. It enables the even distribution of oil and water components, preventing separation and improving product consistency. While its main purpose is structural, it can also act as a cleansing agent at higher concentrations and indirectly support skin moisture retention by stabilizing the product matrix.

Stability

PEG-75 Stearate demonstrates broad compatibility with numerous cosmetic ingredients, facilitating the formulation of complex products. While the wider polyethylene glycol family exhibits diverse viscosity and solubility properties, PEG-75 Stearate specifically exhibits water solubility. Strict purification steps are crucial to control potential trace contaminants such as 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that PEG-75 Stearate, along with other PEG Stearates, is safe as a cosmetic ingredient in current practices of concentration and use. While no specific maximum concentration for PEG-75 Stearate itself has been universally established, related PEG Propylene Glycol Stearates have been deemed safe up to 10% in cosmetic formulations, broadly supporting the safety of the PEG Stearate family. Small amounts of 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide, by-products of ethoxylation, may be present but can be controlled through purification steps. Due to evidence of kidney damage in burn patients treated with PEG-based antimicrobial preparations, this ingredient is not recommended for use on damaged skin. The US FDA has also designated PEG-75 Stearate as safe for general or specific, limited use in food.
