Mechanism of Action
This ingredient works to enhance skin health through several key mechanisms. As an emollient, it establishes a protective film on the skin's surface, effectively reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and promoting a soft, smooth texture for dry or rough skin. Derived from Evening Primrose Oil, it delivers a high concentration of omega-6 essential fatty acids, primarily Linoleic Acid (70-74%) and Gamma-Linolenic Acid (8-10%). These fatty acids are integral for maintaining the skin's lipid barrier, improving moisture retention, elasticity, firmness, and overall skin condition. Gamma-Linolenic Acid notably acts as a precursor to anti-inflammatory eicosanoids, such as prostaglandin E1, which can actively suppress inflammatory mediators including interleukin 1β (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α). Additionally, it may assist in regulating the skin's natural sebum production. In formulation, it functions as an emulsifier, enabling the stable and homogeneous blending of oil and water components.

Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that PEG-60 Evening Primrose Glycerides, belonging to a class of 60 PEGylated alkyl glycerides, is safe for use in current cosmetic practices and concentrations, provided formulations are non-irritating. While some undiluted PEGylated glycerides exhibited irritation in primary rabbit skin studies, properly formulated products generally did not induce irritation or sensitization in alternative and human studies. For reference, the highest reported use concentrations for PEG-60 almond glycerides (a related ingredient) were 3.2% in leave-on and 6.5% in rinse-off products. It is important to note that the FDA's 'Inadequate basis for expectation of safety' status for Evening Primrose Oil pertains to oral consumption as a dietary ingredient and does not apply to the topical use of PEG-60 Evening Primrose Glycerides in cosmetics.
