PEG-40 DISTEARATE.

Valuable CAS - / SURFACTANT - EMULSIFYING

PEG-40 Distearate is a versatile non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier essential for blending oil and water phases in skincare formulations. It also acts as a humectant to attract moisture and a penetration enhancer, optimizing the delivery and efficacy of active ingredients.

Surfactant Emulsifier Humectant Cleansing Agent Solubilizer Viscosity Modifier Penetration Enhancer

Science

Functioning as a non-ionic surfactant and emulsifier, PEG-40 Distearate reduces surface tension to enable the stable mixing of immiscible oil and water components. It draws and retains moisture as a humectant, acts as a cleansing agent, and solubilizes active ingredients and fragrances. Furthermore, it modifies viscosity, enhances the penetration of topical dermatological preparations, and forms a protective film to prevent moisture loss, contributing to moisturized and softened skin.

Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that PEG-40 Stearate (and related PEG Stearates) is safe for cosmetic use, a finding reaffirmed in 2002. Animal studies showed only minimal skin and eye irritation at a 100% concentration, and clinical studies confirmed it is neither an irritant nor a sensitizer at concentrations of 25% or greater. Manufacturers must ensure the removal of impurities such as 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide. Use on damaged skin is not recommended.
