PEG-36 CASTOR OIL.

Valuable CAS 61791-12-6 / SURFACTANT - CLEANSING, SURFACTANT - EMULSIFYING

PEG-36 Castor Oil is a non-ionic surfactant extensively used for its emulsifying and solubilizing capabilities. It effectively blends oil and water phases, allowing for the stable incorporation of water-insoluble ingredients into cosmetic formulations, while also providing emollient and humectant benefits.

Science

As a non-ionic surfactant, PEG-36 Castor Oil functions by significantly reducing the surface tension between immiscible phases, such as oil and water, thereby enabling the formation and stabilization of emulsions. It acts as a potent solubilizer, facilitating the homogenous integration of lipophilic substances, including fragrances, plant extracts, and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), into aqueous systems. Furthermore, it serves as an emollient, enhancing skin softness, a humectant, drawing moisture to the skin, and a dispersing agent. It can also improve foam stability when co-formulated with anionic surfactants and beneficially adjust the viscosity and flow properties of cosmetic products.

Sensitization risk Moderate

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that PEG-30, -33, -35, -36, and -40 Castor Oils are safe for use in cosmetics at concentrations up to 50%. However, studies with 50% PEG-35 Castor Oil indicated skin irritation and an increased potential for sensitization by other ingredients, although no direct sensitization was observed. Trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane, a manufacturing by-product, may be present but can be controlled through purification processes. The FDA approves various PEG Castor Oil ingredients for specific indirect food additive applications. EWG lists a 'MODERATE' concern for 'Allergies & Immunotoxicity', citing strong evidence of human skin toxicant or allergen potential.

Our Assessment

Valuable

PEG-36 Castor Oil is a valuable multifunctional ingredient, widely utilized for its robust emulsifying and solubilizing properties across various cosmetic applications, though its use at higher concentrations (approaching 50%) requires careful consideration due to potential for irritation and increased sensitization risk.
