While initial concerns existed regarding its use on severely damaged skin (e.g., second or third-degree burns) due to potential kidney toxicity from a specific PEG-based antimicrobial cream, subsequent data indicated that significant penetration occurs only under such extreme conditions, leading the CIR to remove this caveat for general cosmetic applications. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) also concludes PEGs and their derivatives are safe for cosmetic use under current conditions, provided manufacturers mitigate impurities like ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane; however, the SCCS still advises against application on damaged skin. The FDA permits polyethylene glycol as an indirect food additive.
