However, it is crucial to note that studies involving severely burned patients, treated multiple times daily with PEG-based antimicrobial creams, indicated a significant increase in penetration and potential kidney toxicity. This systemic toxicity was not observed in individuals with intact skin. Consequently, the CIR Expert Panel recommends that cosmetic products containing PEGs be formulated to ensure non-irritation. The ingredient may contain trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane, a by-product of the ethoxylation process, which should be controlled through appropriate purification steps. The FDA actively participates in CIR reviews, and PEG-12 Oleate is recognized by EWG as safe for general or specific limited use in food, referencing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
