Mechanism of Action
This extract operates through multiple mechanisms to enhance skin health. It profoundly reduces inflammation by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway and blocking JNK1/2 activation, leading to decreased production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-8 and TARC, and lowered IgE levels. It also modulates the IL-17/CCL2 pathway to mitigate UVB-induced inflammation and oxidative stress. For skin barrier support and regeneration, it enhances filaggrin expression, promotes the migration and proliferation of human dermal keratinocytes via the Akt/Erk1/2 pathway, and stimulates the synthesis of collagen types I and IV through collagen sprouting. Furthermore, it exhibits antioxidant capabilities and possesses antimicrobial activity against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) by disrupting its cell wall and membrane.

Key findings
- 01 A specific compound derived from Patrinia scabiosifolia demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity, inhibiting the NF-κB pathway by 73.44% at a concentration of 10 µM in an in vitro reporter gene expression assay.
- 02 Patrinia scabiosifolia flower absolute (1-200 μg/mL) was shown in vitro to induce the proliferation and migration of human dermal keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) and stimulate collagen sprouting.
- 03 An unspecified 'PS extract' effectively inhibited the TNF-α and IFN-γ-induced production of IL-8 and TARC in human keratinocytic HaCaT cells. It also restored filaggrin expression by blocking JNK1/2 and NF-κB activation.
- 04 In a solar dermatitis mouse model, combined extracts including Patrinia scabiosaefolia significantly reduced UVB-induced inflammation, erythema, and epidermal thickening in a dose-dependent manner.

Safety
Safety Profile
An animal study classified a dry extract of Patrinia scabiosifolia as a low-toxic substance, with an LD50 for intragastric injection exceeding 1,000 mg/kg in mice. All animals survived when administered a maximum injected dose of 2,400 mg/kg.
