For optimal potency and extended shelf life, refrigeration (5-7°C or below 21°C) is highly recommended, as ambient or elevated temperatures can lead to rapid chemical degradation. Long-term storage in refrigerated conditions can extend shelf life significantly (up to ten years for some ozonated oils). Increased viscosity is a characteristic, directly correlating with ozonation time, with viscosity decreasing as temperature rises.

A systematic review indicates ozonated liquids, including oils, are generally well-tolerated and pose no significant dermatological risks. Studies have shown no evidence of cytotoxic effects of ozonated neem oil or water at concentrations up to 4 ppm on human skin cells. Rare reported adverse effects include a brief burning sensation in some patients and isolated instances of desquamation (skin peeling). Specific regulatory status by CIR, SCCS, or FDA for 'OZONIZED CASTOR OIL' as a cosmetic ingredient has not yet been established.
