OXIDIZED RICE BRAN WAX.

Valuable / BINDING, FILM FORMING, SKIN CONDITIONING

Oxidized Rice Bran Wax is a multi-functional botanical ingredient derived from rice, precisely processed to enhance its beneficial properties for skin. It acts as an effective emollient, forming a protective barrier to reduce moisture loss and support skin barrier function, while also providing antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Science

Acting primarily as an emollient, Oxidized Rice Bran Wax creates a protective film on the skin's surface, significantly reducing transepidermal water loss and promoting sustained hydration. It delivers antioxidant effects through components like ferulic acid esters and phytosterols, which neutralize free radicals, and exhibits anti-inflammatory properties to soothe and support the skin's natural defenses. The controlled oxidation process increases the wax's polarity by forming carboxylic acids, which enhances its interaction with the skin and improves its emulsifying capabilities within formulations.

Stability

This ingredient significantly enhances the stability and consistency of cosmetic formulations, functioning as a robust thickening agent that contributes to a smooth, creamy texture. It exhibits inherent stability and resistance to rancidity. The oxidation process is characterized by a notable increase in the wax's acid number, typically reaching at least 70 mg KOH/g, and often exceeding 100 mg KOH/g.

Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has deemed rice-derived ingredients, including rice bran wax, safe for use in cosmetics. Further support for the safety of oxidized rice bran wax comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which established an exemption from tolerance requirements when used as an inert ingredient in specific pesticide formulations, effective February 2019. Comprehensive toxicity studies indicate very low acute, subchronic, and chronic toxicity. It has been confirmed as non-irritating in dermal and eye irritation tests, and is not considered a skin sensitizer, showing no evidence of systemic absorption or other adverse effects at high doses (e.g., 1000 mg/kg/day).
