Mechanism of Action
Oryza Sativa and its derivatives function on the skin through several mechanisms: delivering moisturizing benefits via amino acids, polysaccharides, ceramides, and fatty acids to hydrate and retain moisture, thereby reinforcing the skin barrier. It achieves brightening by inhibiting tyrosinase activity and reducing melanin overproduction, attributed to compounds such as gamma-oryzanol, phenolic acids, and flavonoids. Anti-aging properties stem from antioxidants like vitamin E, ferulic acid, and gamma-oryzanol, which combat free radical damage, support collagen integrity, and stimulate the synthesis of collagen and elastin to diminish fine lines. Furthermore, B vitamins, phytocompounds, anthocyanins, and organic acids provide anti-inflammatory action, soothing irritated skin, while natural phytic acid offers gentle exfoliation for smoother texture.

Key findings
- 01 A lotion formulated with 10% black rice bran extract significantly reduced both melanin index and erythema index, demonstrating efficacy in skin lightening and reduction of skin melanin production.
- 02 Rice bran extract (RBE) significantly increased the synthesis of collagen and elastin, elevated skin moisture content, and enhanced skin fibroblast migration, indicating comprehensive benefits for maintaining and improving human skin health.
- 03 An aqueous extract of rice stem cells, at 3200 µg/mL, achieved 85% inhibition of melanin biosynthesis, proving 1.7 times more effective than arbutin in inhibiting factors causing hyperpigmentation.
- 04 Fermented rice bran extract delivered in niosomes reduced skin melanin levels by a factor of 33.2 after 28 days of treatment compared to an untreated control group.

Stability
For Oryza Sativa Extract, optimal stability is generally observed within a pH range of 4.0-7.0. Rice bran sterols can enhance the stability of cosmetic emulsions, slowing changes in color, pH, and viscosity. Cold temperature treatment (below 3°C) can inhibit lipase activity in raw rice bran, reducing oxidative rancidity, effective across a wide pH range of 10-12, though this specifically applies to raw material stabilization.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has deemed rice-derived ingredients, including Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, generally safe for cosmetic use. These ingredients are considered non-allergenic and exhibit low irritation potential. Patch testing is recommended prior to full application.
