Mechanism of Action
Olibanum's primary mechanism involves boswellic acids, which potently inhibit 5-lipoxygenase, a key enzyme in the inflammatory cascade, thereby reducing skin inflammation. It provides antioxidant protection against free radical damage and exhibits antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. On a cellular level, Olibanum supports skin barrier function, stimulates healthy skin cell regeneration by increasing cell proliferation, and enhances elasticity and firmness. It also actively combats signs of aging by inhibiting elastase and collagenase enzymes, which degrade skin proteins like collagen, and protects natural moisturizing factors through antiGAGase activity. For oily skin, it contributes to sebum regulation.

Key findings
- 01 In vitro studies using a preparation containing 0.1% active Olibanum cells (derived from 0.5% HydraSoothing Indian Olibanum, which is 20% cells in 80% vegetal glycerin) demonstrated moisturizing, soothing, regenerating, and antioxidant effects. These included a decrease in lipid peroxidation, limitation of inflammation mediators, increased cell proliferation, and enhanced dynamic and static water retention and GAGs.
- 02 In human dermal fibroblasts (in vitro), frankincense essential oil (FREO) at 0.003% (v/v) exhibited anti-proliferative activity and significantly inhibited collagen III, interferon gamma-induced protein 10, and intracellular cell adhesion molecule 1. This anti-proliferative effect on fibroblasts may be beneficial in managing excessive scar tissue formation.

The Formula
Formulation
Stability
Boswellia serrata extract can exhibit physical and pharmaceutical instability during storage, potentially forming clumps. General herbal stability is sensitive to factors such as heat, light, pH fluctuations, and oxygen exposure, requiring careful handling and storage.
Conflicts
- Undiluted application on skin (risk of burns, inflammation, and adverse skin reactions)
- Poorly processed material containing impurities (potential for skin irritation)
Safety
Safety Profile
Olibanum, particularly its essential oil form, requires dilution with a carrier oil for topical use to prevent irritation, inflammation, or burns. While purified *Boswellia serrata* extract is generally considered safe at recommended concentrations, its natural fragrance components may cause minor sensitivities, necessitating a patch test. Poorly processed material containing impurities can also lead to skin irritation. Frankincense resin itself is classified in Europe as potentially harmful and irritating, with sensitization risks for skin and respiratory system.
