In terms of anti-aging, Oleuropein suppresses the UVB-induced upregulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), specifically MMP-2, MMP-9, and MMP-13, which are enzymes responsible for collagen degradation, while simultaneously promoting collagen production. However, it is unstable when exposed to UV light in water or ethanol, undergoing decomposition. Aqueous solutions are not recommended for storage beyond one day. For extracts, optimal stability is observed at pH 3-5; temperatures exceeding 110°C are detrimental. Its stability and delivery can be significantly improved by encapsulation in nanostructured lipid carriers or liposomal systems. Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, in a Draft Final Report from September 2023, concluded that 16 Olea europaea (olive)-derived ingredients, including those from leaves and fruits, are safe for use in cosmetics. While a specific maximum concentration for isolated oleuropein is not provided, olive leaf extracts have been reported by suppliers to contain not less than 0.03% w/v oleuropein. The FDA has also recognized Olea europaea L. leaf extract as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for various food applications.
