It acts as a powerful antioxidant, actively neutralizing reactive oxygen species and reinforcing the skin's intrinsic antioxidant defenses. Its anti-inflammatory properties are demonstrated by its ability to suppress cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 (COX-1 and COX-2) enzyme activity, similar to ibuprofen. Furthermore, Oleocanthal exhibits antimicrobial activity against non-pathogenic skin bacteria, exerts antiproliferative effects on keratinocytes, and significantly stimulates human fibroblast production and migration, thereby supporting tissue regeneration and wound healing. When synergistically combined with oleacein, it also protects skin collagen integrity by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinase activation, all while demonstrating effective epidermal penetration.
