Mechanism of Action
This extract is rich in potent bioactive compounds, including polyphenols and flavonoids such as oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol. These compounds exert powerful antioxidant effects by neutralizing free radicals, thereby mitigating oxidative stress and preventing premature cellular aging. Furthermore, Olea Europaea Leaf Extract demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory actions by modulating various inflammatory mediators, including TNF-α and IL-1β, which helps calm irritation and support the skin's natural healing processes. It also contributes to skin barrier integrity by promoting deep hydration and improving elasticity, while also offering photoprotective benefits and supporting cell renewal.

Dusting Analysis
Olea Europaea Leaf Extract is typically utilized at effective concentrations, with a recommended optimal range of 2-5% and a safe external use range starting at 0.1%. While not commonly identified as a 'dusted' ingredient, formulations containing it below the 0.1% threshold may be considered underdosed for optimal benefits.

Stability
The active polyphenols are prone to degradation, posing stability challenges. Oleuropein concentration is most stable within a pH range of 3.0-5.0. Optimal extract stability is achieved at -20°C, whereas 25°C significantly reduces oleuropein and total phenolic content. High temperatures (e.g., 110°C) are detrimental. Aqueous extracts show good oleuropein stability for up to 7 days at room temperature. Encapsulation is a suggested strategy to protect bioactive compounds from oxidation and environmental factors, and to mask any potential mild, unpleasant odor.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract is safe in cosmetics as used. It was predicted to be a non-irritant at 100% in in vitro and rabbit studies, with no irritation or dermal sensitization observed in human studies involving up to 100% extract or products containing up to 20% extract. The highest reported concentration in leave-on formulations is 2% in suntan preparations. It is also Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the FDA for consumption. No specific SCCS review was available.
