Mechanism of Action
This extract modulates several cellular pathways to benefit skin. Its anti-inflammatory action is mediated by suppressing the production of key inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), alongside inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation. As an antioxidant, it actively neutralizes free radicals. For addressing hyperpigmentation, it has demonstrated melanogenesis inhibition, particularly when formulated in combination with other extracts. Additionally, it exhibits antibacterial properties, specifically inhibiting luxS-dependent biofilm formation relevant to certain skin concerns.

Key findings
- 01 A cosmetic composition incorporating Oldenlandia Diffusa extract, alongside Rheum undulatum and Broussonetia kazinoki extracts, demonstrated superior melanogenesis inhibition and skin whitening effects in external skin application, without reported harm to the skin.
- 02 In vitro studies utilizing 7-25 mg raw material/ml exhibited strong antiproliferative activity against various cancer cell lines with minimal toxicity to normal pancreatic cells, suggesting broad cellular impact.
- 03 Further in vitro and in vivo research involving 0.25 mg total flavonoids/ml indicated inhibition of hepatocellular carcinoma proliferation and induction of apoptosis and autophagy.

Safety
Safety Profile
Formal safety assessments for cosmetic use by regulatory bodies such as CIR, SCCS, or FDA are not currently available. While a patented whitening composition containing this extract was reported 'safe to skin', and non-cosmetic *in vitro* and animal studies indicated minimal toxicity to normal cells and no noticeable adverse effects, these do not equate to comprehensive cosmetic safety reviews. Concerns regarding inconsistent quality control and the substitution of similar species in commercial products have been noted.
