Mechanism of Action
This microalgal extract delivers its benefits primarily through antioxidant action, safeguarding skin from free radical damage and oxidative stress. It functions as a skin conditioning agent, bolstering the skin's natural barrier to promote softness and hydration. Molecularly, it positively influences genes critical for skin texture and hydration (e.g., AQP3, Col6A1, FBN1) while modulating those linked to irritation, DNA damage, and aging (e.g., IL1R, PCNA, FOXO3). Its anti-aging and brightening effects are partly attributed to the inhibition of elastase and tyrosinase enzymatic activities, and it may also provide UV protective benefits.

Key findings
- 01 Significantly increased ATP levels, indicating enhanced cell viability in human dermal fibroblasts, suggesting robust skin protection against oxidative stress.
- 02 Demonstrated inhibition of human elastase activity, contributing to anti-wrinkle efficacy.
- 03 Exhibited inhibition of tyrosinase activity, indicating potential for reducing hyperpigmentation.
- 04 Showed broad skin protective functions including anti-melanogenic, antioxidant, skin-moisturizing, anti-inflammatory, anti-wrinkling, and UV protective effects, with low cytotoxicity. Specifically decreased mushroom tyrosinase activity by up to 59.2%.

Stability
Nannochloropsis gaditana is rich in polar lipids, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants. While the stability of its biomass's polyunsaturated fatty acids and pigments can be maintained under specific storage conditions (e.g., 4°C, nitrogen or air atmosphere), specific optimal pH ranges for cosmetic formulation stability are not yet established. Encapsulation may be a viable strategy to enhance stability and bioavailability within cosmetic products.
Safety
Safety Profile
Nannochloropsis gaditana extract is generally considered safe for topical use, demonstrating no irritation in a 3D human skin model and a low comedogenicity rating of 1. While side effects are rare, a patch test is recommended prior to widespread application. Notably, the FDA approved Nannochloropsis algae as a novel food, and safety evaluations of its oil identified a no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of 2.8 g/kg BW in oral subchronic toxicity and teratogenicity studies.
