Mechanism of Action
This ingredient demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects by moderating pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, specifically inducible NO synthase and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and by inhibiting Ca(2+)-dependent phospholipase A2 enzymes. Rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, it actively combats oxidative stress from free radicals. It also functions as a skin replenisher, supporting new cell regeneration, enhancing moisture retention, stimulating collagen production, and thereby improving skin elasticity and firmness. Furthermore, it exhibits anti-photoaging capabilities and tyrosinase inhibitory activity, attributed to its lignan content, which promotes skin brightening.

Safety Profile
Extensive genotoxicity tests on Morinda citrifolia seed powder, including in vitro Ames, in vitro chromosomal aberration, and in vivo micronucleus tests, found no genotoxic signs. Specifically, in vitro chromosomal aberration tests demonstrated safety up to 2100 μg/mL for a 6-hour treatment and 370-450 μg/mL for a 24-hour treatment (with metabolic activation). The Ames test showed no genotoxicity up to 5000 μg/plate. While some reports suggest concerns about anthraquinones in noni seeds, specific testing on the seed powder found no chromosomal abnormalities, indicating their absence or the presence of counteracting antigenotoxic iridoids. Topical application of Morinda citrifolia seed oil has been clinically proven safe and non-irritating, with a very low risk of causing allergic dermatitis. Morinda citrifolia L. fruit powder is also listed in the FDA's food additive status.
