Mechanism of Action
Montmorillonite acts as a potent adsorbent, leveraging its charged structure to attract and remove positively charged substances such as dirt, grime, excess sebum, and other impurities from the skin and pores. It supports wound repair by reducing inflammation, attenuating oxidative stress, enhancing angiogenesis, and stimulating growth factors and collagen synthesis. In formulations, it contributes to increased bulk and viscosity, aids in maintaining pH balance, and its significant water-absorbing capacity can help sustain skin hydration. It may also provide a physical barrier against UV radiation and reduce exposure to water-soluble chemicals.

Dusting Analysis
While safe for external application in formulations, direct occupational inhalation of raw Montmorillonite dust has been associated with pulmonary damage. Therefore, products formulated as sprays should be designed to minimize inhalation exposure.

Stability
Montmorillonite's inherent composition remains stable across a broad pH range of 1-13, with modified variants demonstrating optimal functionality in cosmetic formulations between pH 4.5 and 8.5. However, its hydrophilic nature in water-based systems can lead to formulation challenges, including aggregation, sedimentation, and unpredictable rheological behavior due to excessive swelling. Natural Montmorillonite may harbor microorganisms, and its high water absorption can promote microbial growth, posing a risk of contamination. Compatibility with oil-based systems is limited, though surface modification can enhance integration.

Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that Montmorillonite is safe for use in cosmetic and personal care formulations. While raw Montmorillonite powder can cause skin and serious eye irritation, as well as respiratory irritation if inhaled, these concerns primarily pertain to occupational exposure to the raw material, not typically to finished cosmetic products. The EU Cosmetics Regulation lists no restrictions for its use. However, due to observed pulmonary damage from direct occupational inhalation, formulations delivered as sprays should minimize inhalation.
