This ingredient is water-soluble, readily dissolving in both hot and cold water to form viscous solutions. Stability is compromised below pH 4.0, where polymer breakage and viscosity reduction can occur, particularly with concentrated acid addition. While generally stable across a wide pH range above 4.0, its viscosity may reversibly decrease at elevated temperatures. Fine particle sizes are recommended for rapid hydration, whereas coarser materials facilitate slower hydration and improved dispersion with less shear.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed Cellulose Gum and related cellulose derivatives, concluding their safety under current cosmetic use practices. Clinical studies on cellulose derivatives, even at concentrations up to 100%, consistently demonstrated them to be non-irritating to mildly irritating, non-sensitizing, and non-photosensitizing. The FDA recognizes cellulose gum as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use in food and pharmaceuticals. The SCCS has not issued a specific opinion on 'METHYLAMIDO CELLULOSE GUM' or 'Cellulose Gum'.
